University of California Regents Chairman Russell Gould and UC President Mark G. Yudof today (May 19) announced creation of committees that will address challenges in creating and sustaining a tolerant, inclusive environment on each of the university's 10 campuses.
Gould said Regent Eddie Island, who will chair the Ad Hoc Committee on Campus Climate, "has been a strong advocate for students. I know he will lead this effort with deep commitment and passion."
The other committee members are Regents George Kieffer, Bonnie Reiss, Fred Ruiz, Leslie Schilling, Charlene Zettel, Alumni Regent Darek DeFreece; Student Regent Jesse Cheng; Faculty Representative Henry Powell; and Staff Advisor Juliann Martinez.
Yudof said members of his Advisory Council on Campus Climate, Culture and Inclusion will be named soon. They will work closely with Regent Eddie Island and the Ad Hoc Committee on Campus Climate. The 17-member council will identify, evaluate and share "promising practices" at other institutions across the state and nation, and monitor and evaluate the progress of each campus toward creating conditions that support the university's mission and provide equal opportunities for all UC students, faculty and staff.
The council will provide regular reports and updates to the Regents Ad Hoc Committee on Campus Climate.
Campus Councils are expected to set metrics, monitor progress and report regularly to the systemwide Advisory Council on Campus Climate, Culture and Inclusion.
