UC campuses rated tops in nation


Eight University of California campuses have been included in the 2010 Washington Monthly college rankings, released today (Aug. 23) by the magazine.

They include San Diego, first; Berkeley, second; UCLA, third; Davis, sixth; and Santa Barbara, 11th. In addition, Riverside is ranked 40th; Irvine, 50th; and Santa Cruz, 93rd. The complete list of national universities — institutions that offer undergraduate and graduate study — numbers 258. The entire guide is available online.

The magazine rates schools based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories: social mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and Ph.Ds) and service (encouraging students to give something back to their country).
