The council consists of 94 academic societies devoted to biomedical and behavioral research, medical education and patient care. It serves as a forum for discussing and exchanging information of common interest to medical-school faculty and for evaluating and recommending policy initiatives to the association. Khatri represents the Society of University Surgeons on the council.

Khatri is an editorial board member of the Annals of Surgical Oncology, Open Oncology Journal, World Journal of Surgical Oncology, the International Journal of Surgical Oncology and Journal of Cancer Therapy. He also served on the editorial board of the prestigious Journal of Clinical Oncology. He is a preferred reviewer for AIRC, Italian Association for Cancer Research and is a reviewer for Cochrane Hepatobiliary Group in Belgium. Khatri is a peer-reviewer for the AAMC's MedEdPortal, its publication service and repository for medical and oral health teaching materials, assessment tools and faculty development resources.
He is a member of several professional societies, including the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association and the International Association of Surgeons, Gastroenterologists and Oncologists, and has served as an invited faculty member to programs in Greece, China and Korea. He has served as an associate examiner for the American Board of Surgery certifying (oral) examinations, is a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology's Clinical Affairs Committee and is a member of the American College of Surgeons' Committee on Education for Medical Students.
Khatri joined UC Davis Health system in 1999. He is a professor of clinical surgery and is co-director of the oncology unit. He has held several leadership positions within the health system, including director of the Department of Surgery faculty development and mentoring program, chair and vice-chair of the School of Medicine's Faculty Personnel Committee, and now serves as the secretary of the School of Medicine's Faculty Executive Committee. He is also an instructor in the UC Davis Extension Executive Leadership Program.

Its top specialists provide compassionate, comprehensive care for more than 9,000 adults and children every year, and offer patients access to more than 150 clinical trials at any given time. Its innovative research program includes more than 280 scientists at UC Davis and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The unique partnership, the first between a major cancer center and national laboratory, has resulted in the discovery of new tools to diagnose and treat cancer. Through the Cancer Care Network, UC Davis is collaborating with a number of hospitals and clinical centers throughout the Central Valley and Northern California regions to offer the latest cancer-care services.
