Six University of California scientists and engineers were named by President Obama on Nov. 5 to receive the U.S. government's highest honor to researchers at the outset of their careers.
UC winners of the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers include:
- Alexandre M. Bayen, UC Berkeley, civil and environmental engineering
- Jeffrey S. Ross-Ibarra, UC Davis, plant science
- Iike Arslan, UC Davis, chemical engineering and material science
- Nathan C. Gianneschi, UC San Diego, chemistry and biochemistry
- Gavin E. Crooks, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, physical biosciences
- Trent R. Northen, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, life sciences
They were among 85 researchers selected by the White House for their pursuit of innovative research at the frontiers of science and technology and their commitment to community service as demonstrated through scientific leadership, public education, or community outreach. Winning scientists and engineers have received research grants for up to five years to further their studies.
