OAKLAND — Enjoy some brain food with your lunchtime meal. Every month, the Office of Research and Graduate Studies invites distinguished scholars from across the UC system to the Office of the President to share their work and insights with UCOP staff.
Speakers range from scientists and directors to artists and thinkers, providing a rich variety and insight into what "research" means to various fields. What are the key questions being asked? What are the unique challenges? And how are UC researchers looking for answers? Speakers are invited to talk about their work, the state of research in their fields, national trends and events, and their personal motivations and experiences.
This month's scheduled speakers, Lynn Zucker and Michael Darby of UCLA, are featured at noon Friday (March 18) in room 5320 of the Franklin office in downtown Oakland. They will discuss the impact of industry-university collaboration, including findings that indicate how industry partnerships can strengthen university research.
Future lectures include:
- April 29: Laurence C. Smith, UCLA, "The World in 2050: Four Forces Shaping the North," Franklin 5320
- May 13: Wayne Cornelius, UC San Diego, "Anatomy of a Policy Failure: Border Control and Mexican Migration," Franklin 5320
- June 10: V. "Ram" Ramanathan, UC San Diego, "From CFCs to Cook Stoves: How to Stop Global Warming," location TBA
Lectures are presented as informal brown bag lunches. All UCOP staff are invited; or watch live at www.ucstream.tv/ucevents. E-mail orgs@ucop.edu for more information.
