Titled "Water for Cities: Responding to the Urban Challenge," the open day will take place from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Orbach Science Library.
The event also will serve as an opportunity for the public to get acquainted with the new Water Resources Collections and Archives that UC Riverside and Cal State San Bernardino recently acquired.
The agenda for the day includes presentations on the state's urban water challenge, in Room 240, by local water agencies, including the Eastern Municipal Water District and Western Municipal Water District, and the Santa Ana Watershed Project Authority. Participants will learn about river basin management, urban and agricultural supply and treatment, and water recycling.
Also included in the day's agenda are the films "Cadillac Desert" and Huell Howser's "California's Water," which will be screened in Room 122. There also will be displays related to International Water Day on the first floor of the library.
"The topic of this year's International Water Day is the core of the water problem in Southern California," said Ariel Dinar, the director of the Water Science and Policy Center. "Recognizing the challenges and being aware of how they are being addressed by water agencies will make a difference in our appreciation of the state's water problems."
