SAN DIEGO — The University of California, San Diego is ranked 11th in the world for the number of research papers published in Nature and its 16 other preeminent research journals, according to the Nature Publishing Group.  

UC San Diego was the top ranked university in the University of California system. Six UC campuses are ranked in the top 50 and if all10  campuses were aggregated together, the UC system would be ranked No. 1.

“Publishing in the Nature family of journals is a badge of honor for many scientists,” said Kim Barrett, dean of graduate studies at UC San Diego. “With our outstanding faculty, post-doctoral fellows and graduate students, all working on exciting and important problems, it’s not surprising that we score so highly in this new measure of research impact.”

Nature journals cover a broad spectrum of basic research in the life sciences, physical and chemical sciences. According to Nature, “The journals are a preeminent platform for publication of the very best international research and it is fitting that this portfolio of high quality journals serve as a benchmark for research success and achievement.”

The rankings were released simultaneously as the launch of the beta site for the Nature Publishing Index. The new index gives an indication of where some of the best research in the world is being carried out across the broad range of fields encompassed by Nature Publishing Group’s 17 Nature-branded primary research titles in life sciences, physics, chemistry, materials, nanotechnology, photonics and geoscience.
