UC President Mark Yudof joined the leaders of California's public higher education systems in Sacramento today (April 5) to push for more stable funding for the state's colleges and universities.

Two hundred advocates, including Yudof, CSU Chancellor Charles Reed and California Community College Chancellor Jack Scott, turned out for Higher Education Advocacy Day. They urged lawmakers to avoid further higher education cuts beyond the planned $1.4 billion reduction in the state's 2011-12 budget. The three system leaders also met with Gov. Jerry Brown.

"The university is an engine of wealth creation and stripping it of its professors and research in the way an all-cuts budget would require is unacceptable," Brown told reporters when he emerged from the hour-long meeting. A short video of his comments is included.
