SAN DIEGO — Dr. Ravindra L. Mehta is the recipient of the International Society of Nephrology Shire Bywaters Award for 2011. Mehta is a professor of medicine at the Division of Nephrology and associate chair of clinical research at the Department of Medicine, University of California, San Diego.

The award was established by the ISN to recognize lifetime achievement and outstanding contributions to the understanding of acute renal failure. Mehta's research has focused on the epidemiology and management of acute kidney injury (AKI) in critically ill patients, and his contributions have led to the development of citrate anticoagulation for continuous renal replacement therapies (CRRT), formation of the Acute Kidney Injury Network (AKIN) diagnostic and staging criteria for AKI and the development of guidelines for AKI management. He also initiated an international project contributing epidemiological information on AKI worldwide. Mehta also directs the Acute Dialysis Program and the UC San Diego CREST and Masters-in-Clinical Research Program.
