SANTA BARBARA — The University of California Education Abroad Program has launched a website at eap.ucop.edu/50 to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

The program, which serves all 10 University of California campuses, has enabled thousands of students to explore the world, expand their academic horizons, learn new languages, and gain global perspectives that enrich their studies, lives and careers.

UCEAP is widely regarded as one of the nation's best study abroad programs. Each year it provides international education programs to more than 4,500 UC students, and it brings 1,700 visiting students from around the world to study at UC campuses.

"In the half-century since the first participants set out for Bordeaux in the south of France, UCEAP has grown to become a global leader in study abroad," said Jean-Xavier Guinard, associate vice provost and executive director of the University of California Education Abroad Program. "The goal of UCEAP's 50th anniversary is to celebrate 50 years of study abroad leadership and innovation at the University of California and continue to strengthen and grow the program in the next 50 years."

The UCEAP community now comprises nearly 100,000 alumni, hundreds of UC faculty and administrators, and many other supporters who have helped build the program into what it is today.

There are several ways for the UCEAP community to join this year's celebration. An up-to-date calendar of celebratory events is available online, including information on a systemwide celebration on April 28, 2012 at UC Santa Barbara. Community members may also submit their interest in hosting a UCEAP reunion or event and share their input by contacting Andrea Delap. Additionally, the UCEAP Alumni Association, which is free to join, provides alumni an opportunity to update their contact information, reconnect with UCEAP and stay updated on UCEAP news and events.

The site also showcases UCEAP's history including notable individuals and memorable stories from the past half-century of study abroad. It also highlights UCEAP's 50th Anniversary Faculty-Led Summer Programs.

The website will be updated throughout the year with new content, including articles and event information.

The University of California Education Abroad Program (UCEAP) has served as the UC systemwide international exchange program since 1962. Serving all ten campuses, UCEAP continues its support of the University of California's mission through academic instruction and exchange relationships around the world. Through study abroad, UCEAP provides the opportunity for students to become international citizens and global thinkers, equipping them with the understanding and skills necessary for success in the global marketplace.
