Bertell came to UC San Diego Health Sciences in 2011 as executive director of development for principal gifts. Prior to that, she was senior vice president for the Greenwood Co., a consulting firm headquartered in San Francisco. There, she conducted campaign planning and management for such organizations as the Gladstone Institutes, Buck Institute for Age Research and Scripps Health.
From 2002 to 2007, Bertell served as vice president for Institute Relations at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla. She is a graduate of UCLA and received a master's degree in communications management from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California. A certified fund raising executive with the National Society of Fund Raising Executives, she also is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy and the Southern California Association of Healthcare Development.
