People make an observation, give it a simple three-letter word — oil — but actually understanding what that stuff is, people don't know. This episode of Onward California follows David Valentine, professor of Earth science at UC Santa Barbara, to his research site off the California coast at Shane seep. "Where I got interested and remain interested is, we still don't know the full composition of oil, we don't know what all these different compounds are that make up oil."
