|Bruce Varner is chair of the UC Board of Regents.
Recently elected UC Board of Regents chair Bruce D. Varner, an attorney and UC alumnus, will preside over the first meeting of his one-year tenure when board members convene this week at UC San Francisco’s Mission Bay campus.
Varner, who served for the past two years as vice chair of the regents, succeeds Regent Sherry Lansing. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Varner in 2006 for a 12-year term on the board. All members of the UC Board of Regents serve without receiving monetary compensation.
Varner is a partner with Varner & Brandt LLP, which specializes in general business, corporate and transactional law. He earned his B.A. degree in political science from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and his J.D. from UC Hastings College of the Law. He is active in many civic and volunteer associations, including the President's Advancement Council of California State University, San Bernardino. He is a member of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Council, a past chairman of the board of directors of the Inland Empire Economic Partnership and a member of the University of California, Riverside Foundation board of trustees.
Varner’s term as chair of the Board of Regents began July 1, 2013. He previously served as chair of the board’s Committees on Finance and Compensation, vice chair of the Committee on Governance and as a member of the Committee on Oversight of the DOE Laboratories.
