Rajesh Gupta, professor of information and computer science (ICS) at UC Irvine, has been appointed the editor-in-chief of the journal IEEE Design & Test of Computers. Gupta, the first ICS professor to be named editor-in-chief of an IEEE publication, takes over his post with the January-February 2002 issue of the magazine.
IEEE Design & Test of Computers, a publication of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE) Computer Society in technical co-sponsorship with the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, is published six times annually.
"Design and Test represents the leading and most promising research being conducted in the practical design and testing of microelectronic circuits and systems," Gupta said. "I am pleased to be associated with a publication that has increasingly become an indispensable part of the microelectronic profession."
Gupta currently leads the Interfaces and Software Systems group of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology [Cal-(IT)2] at UCI. Additionally, he heads an effort on Adaptive Memory System Architectures and co-leads an effort on Compiler-Controlled Power/Performance Management, programs both sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense.
Before joining ICS, Gupta worked as an assistant professor at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Prior to that, he was at Intel Corporation in Santa Clara, Calif., where he worked on a number of processor design teams. He is a co-author of three patents and the author of a book on embedded systems published by Kluwer Academic in 1995.
The recipient of numerous awards, including the UCI Chancellor's Award for excellence in undergraduate research, National Science Foundation CAREER Award, two Departmental Achievement Awards and a Components Research Team Award at Intel, Gupta serves as a board of governor of the IEEE Circuits and Systems (CAS) Society. He is a distinguished lecturer for the Association for Computing Machinery's/Special Interest Group on Design Automation and IEEE CAS Society.
Gupta, who previously served as the magazine's associate editor-in-chief, will hold this new post through December 2003. He replaces Yervant Zorian of LogicVision, Inc.
ABOUT ICS
The Department of Information and Computer Science was founded in 1968 in recognition of the emerging importance of this field. Its mission is to lead the innovation of new information and computing technology and study its economic, commercial and social significance while producing an educated work force to serve as the economic engine for the advancement of technology. With 41 faculty members, 1,750 undergraduates and 250 graduate students, ICS is the largest computing program within the University of California system as well as the fastest growing major at UC Irvine.
