UCSD Announces 2002 Freshman Admissions Data

The University of California, San Diego has admitted 16,959 freshmen for the
Fall 2002 quarter, selected from a record 41,343 freshmen applications
(second highest in the University of California system). The group is well
prepared academically, with a mean high school grade point average (GPA) of
4.03, and average composite Scholastic Assessment Test (SATI) scores of
1282. Among the freshmen group are 1,004 admits to the charter class of
UCSD's Sixth College, which opens in September.

Of the 16,959 admitted freshmen, 5,806 were identified as Eligible in the
Local Context (ELC), which means that these are UC eligible students who
were identified as the top four percent of their high school graduating
class. The average GPA of the ELC group is 4.17; their composite SAT I score
is 1273. Approximately 28.4% of the newly admitted ELC students came from
the historically underrepresented groups at UCSD: African American, Mexican
Americans, Latino, and Native American.

More than 1,800 of the newly admitted freshmen are from San Diego and
Imperial Counties. The most popular majors chosen by this class continue to
be biology, bioengineering, economics, computer science, and psychology.

Data on the admission of underrepresented students delivers some good news.
Building on the increase in applications, the admitted freshmen class for
fall 2002 shows a 32.0 percent increase in the number of underrepresented
students. African-American admits are at 334, up 36.9 percent over last
year; Mexican Americans are at 1,514, up 33.2 percent; Latinos are at 472,
up 23.9 percent, and Native Americans are at 80, up 42.9 percent.

Mae Brown, acting assistant vice chancellor for Enrollment Management, said
"We are very pleased with the increase in applications, the academic quality
of the admitted pool, the increased diversity, and the addition of Sixth
College, which welcomes its charter class in the fall."

Admitted freshmen have until May 1, 2002 to indicate whether they will
attend UCSD. The Office of Admissions & Relations with Schools, the
undergraduate colleges, academic departments, faculty, students and staff
have planned an Admit Day program which will be held on Saturday, April 13
for admitted students and their families.

Note: The UCSD figures reflect the campus's total admitted pool count as of
April 2, 2002, and will differ from data posted by the UC Office of the
President.
