BACKGROUND:

More than 200 students from Newport-Mesa schools will participate in the Fifth Annual Latino Youth Conference, "Preparing for Your Future," as part of an educational partnership among UC Irvine, Save Our Youth/SOY Center, Newport-Mesa Unified School District, Youth Employment Service, Girls Inc. and Coastline College.

The conference is designed to offer students information about existing educational opportunities, including community and campus-based support systems, academic preparation, financial aid opportunities and dorm life. Participants will attend workshops designed to enhance their understanding of what it takes to become academically competitive and the tools and strategies needed to achieve success. The following workshops will be held:

Preparing for college - Explore study skill strategies for achieving academic success in middle school and high school.

Preparing for the SAT - Learn about what it represents, its importance to college admissions and how to prepare for the SAT I and II.

The cost of college - Discover resources to finance a college education.

Service opportunities - Investigate how to explore, secure and get the most out of volunteer activities and community service.

College life - Gain insights as current UCI students share their college experiences.
