An alternative to secession from Los Angeles will be the topic of the 18th annual Bollens-Ries Memorial Lecture sponsored by the UCLA School of Public Policy and Social Research and the UCLA Department of Political Science.
Â·Kevin Starr, state librarian of California, will be the keynote speaker. Starr, author of the â€œAmericans and the California Dreamâ€? series, will discuss â€œBorough, Si! Secession, No! Or, Itâ€™s Time to Start Thinking About a Borough System for Los Angeles.â€?
Â·Edmund Edelman, senior fellow for the Rand Corporation and former Los Angeles County supervisor, will give the introduction.

The annual Bollens-Ries Lecture Series brings together the worlds of academics and practical politics to illuminate discussion of the broader principles and ideas of representative government. The lectures commemorate John Bollens and John Ries, distinguished professors who served in the Department of Political Science at UCLA.
