2002-08-20
As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, Maria Teresa and Maria de Jesus Quiej Alvarez remain in serious condition with stable vital signs in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at UCLA's Mattel Children's Hospital. The twins, who were conjoined at the head at birth, were separated Aug. 6 in a nearly 23-hour surgery. Maria Teresa remains on a ventilator and under moderate sedation while she recovers from a three-hour surgical procedure performed Aug. 16. Maria de Jesus continues to be alert and active. Doctors remain cautiously optimistic about the long-term prospects for the recovery of both girls.
