$100,000 Gift From U.S. Navy

UC Riverside's Bourns College of Engineering (BCOE) received a $100,000 check at a dedication ceremony on Aug. 26, 2002, for the new Measurement Science & Technology Laboratory at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) in Corona.

Of this amount of the contract award, $25,000 will establish NSWC, Corona Division, as an industrial affiliate of BCOE. The remaining $75,000 will support research by Professor Ashok Mulchandani, who will monitor emerging technology and interpret specific advancements in connection with biological and chemical detection sensor systems.

Professor Satish K. Tripathi, dean of the College of Engineering, accepted the check from NSWC Executive Director John Fishell, Head of Measurement Science Directorate Arman Hovakemian and Commanding Officer Captain Walter Wright. Congressman Ken Calvert (CA - 43rd District), whose efforts helped make the new facility possible, was also in attendance.

As a member of the College's Industrial Affiliates, NSWC-Corona will continue its involvement through activities such as research collaboration, providing internships for students and hiring of BCOE graduates.

"The partnership will include opportunities for consulting and collaborating between faculty members and NSWC engineers on research areas of mutual interest," said BCOE Assistant Dean Dennis Rice.

"This is the beginning of a productive relationship with the U.S. Navy," said David Iyall, director of development at BCOE. "We expect more such collaborations in the future."

The period of performance for this research is one year. The effort will begin Oct. 2002 and conclude in Aug. 2003.
