UCSD Professor Quincy Troupe Announces Resignation

Quincy Troupe, University of California, San Diego professor of American and Caribbean Literature and Creative Writing, today announced that he will resign his position at UCSD.

An influential teacher, award-winning poet and prolific writer and editor, Professor Troupe joined the UCSD literature faculty in 1991. He recently admitted that he did not earn a bachelor’s degree from Grambling College, as his resume stated. A UCSD review of this violation of the University of California Faculty Code of Conduct has been underway for several weeks, and Professor Troupe’s decision to resign brings the review to a close.

Professor Troupe stated in his resignation letter, “I very much regret my lapse in judgment and the problems it has created for my department and the broader UCSD community. I have enjoyed my tenure at UCSD and look forward to continuing my relationship with my friends, colleagues, and former and present students.

UCSD Chancellor Robert C. Dynes said, in acceptance of the resignation, “Although I understand and agree with Quincy’s decision to step down, he will be greatly missed as a colleague and friend who brings prodigious talent to the classroom, to his writing, and to his role as a national figure in the arts. His decision reflects our shared view that teachers are role models who must uphold the intellectual honesty we cherish as a community of scholars.

The resignation will go into effect at the end of this academic year. Until then, Professor Troupe will fulfill his teaching obligations, continue to perform extensive community service, and speak to student groups about the importance of education, creativity and integrity in their lives.
