Facing a major state budget deficit, Gov. Gray Davis proposed mid-year spending reductions across state government today (Dec. 6), including cuts in non-instructional areas at the University of California. The governor proposed $74 million in mid-year cuts at UC, including a $19 million unallocated reduction.
At their Dec. 16 meeting, the regents will take action on a final 2002-03 UC budget and will consider a proposal to address the $19 million unallocated reduction through a $135 increase in mandatory systemwide student fees beginning in the spring 2003 quarter, along with additional fee increases for professional school programs.
A press release with more information about the budget and student fees is available here.
