A national economic impact conservatively estimated at $4.6 billion in fiscal year 2002 is reported by the University of California, San Diego in its newly issued annual report.

Included in UCSD's $1.7 billion in annual revenues was a record $550 million awarded to conduct research, a 7.9 percent increase over the previous years $510 million and a measure of UCSD's fifth place national ranking in federal research awards.

The $4.6 billion national economic impact total is almost 13 times the $356.7 million that the campus received from the state of California last year. In addition, UCSD's July 2001 through June 2002 expenditures had an indirect economic impact of $2.5 billion as they rippled through the local economy.

The economic realities of the year challenged us, as it did all Americans, to plan and work more wisely than ever, said UCSD Chancellor Robert C. Dynes. Although we are in a major growth period, as our student body continues to grow, and our State funding faces severe cuts, the administration, faculty and staff continue to maintain a can-dospirit. Our goal is to make judicious use of limited resources, and to obtain maximum benefits from our core operating funds. The ongoing development of efficient and cost-effective business systems remains a management priority.

The principal sources of revenue to the campus were: income generated by UCSD hospitals and clinics ($435.5 million); federal awards for research ($411 million); funding from the state of California ($356.7 million); educational activities ($143.6 million); private gifts, grants and contracts ($129.7 million); tuition and fees ($129.6 million); auxiliary enterprises such as housing and bookstores ($85.2 million); other sources ($21.8), and the City and County of San Diego ($4.1 million).

UCSD expenditures that impacted the economy directly included:

  • $1,046.3 million in goods and services purchased by the campus last year.

  • $69.3 million paid in salaries each month.

  • $76 million in student and visitor spending last year.

  • $119.2 million that UCSD disbursed in financial aid and scholarships to 11,673 undergraduate students last year.

  • $155.4 million in federal income and payroll taxes and $31.2 million in state taxes that UCSD paid on behalf of its employees last year.

The UCSD Office of Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property Services (TechTIPS) links academic research to the commercial world of marketable products. Last year, TechTIPS, along with the UC Office of Technology Transfer:

  • managed more than 300 new inventions and copyrights related to UCSD technology

  • helped create 10 companies relying on UCSD technology

  • generated $13.5 million in royalties and other revenues to support further research.

UCSD is planning to spend close to $800 million on capital plan improvementsnew construction and equipment over the next five years to handle the campus extensive growth. These projects include research buildings, new classrooms, conference and housing facilities and parking structures.

With a total employment of 21,226, UCSD is the third largest employer in San Diego, following the federal government and the state of California. It had a total of 23,548 students registered in the fall of 2002, of which 19,088 were undergraduates.
