University of California, Riverside Chancellor France A. Córdova, announced today that David H. Warren, executive vice chancellor for nearly nine years has decided to step down from the EVC position effective June 30, 2003.

"I accept David's decision with great sadness for the loss it represents for the campus," said Córdova. "At the same time I am pleased and supportive of David's decision to embark on planning this next phase of his career and I look forward to his continuing contributions to UC Riverside."

She added, "David has served this campus with both dignity and grace during his nine-year term as EVC and has worked tirelessly for the benefit of UCR during his nearly 35-year career here. As a professor, department chair, dean, Executive Vice Chancellor, and as Acting Chancellor, his leadership and vision have contributed to UCR's continual growth and recognition in national and international prominence and stature."

"My career has tended to develop in roughly eight to nine year increments and I am excited to move on to the opportunities in this next phase," said Warren. "It has been my privilege to work closely with Chancellor Córdova since her arrival and to be able to make this decision for my career feeling tremendous confidence that UCR is on course under her very capable leadership and the strength of its faculty and administration."

Warren's immediate plans include a sabbatical, followed by as yet unconfirmed plans for research, teaching and involvement in developing regional initiatives.

As a strong proponent for quality in faculty hiring and the development of programs and curriculum, Warren is recognized for demonstrating extraordinary leadership in UCR's recent academic strategic planning process that resulted in Vision 2010, a roadmap for the future that incorporated the ideas and hopes for the campus from its every constituency. He has been a willing and tireless participant in campus outreach activities; he supported the establishment of a coordinated outreach program under the ALPHA Center umbrella to strengthen UCR's relationship with its K-12 partners and maximize the engagement of faculty, staff, and students in outreach activities.

"I am very proud of our accomplishments," said Warren. "This campus is in the unique position of having the potential for more impact on our regional community than any other UC campus has the ability to do. It is gratifying to know that I have contributed to that prospect."

Chancellor Córdova will appoint a Search Advisory Committee to assist her in the search to fill the Executive Vice Chancellor position.
