University of California President Richard C. Atkinson was today (Wednesday, May 7) named recipient of the National Science Foundation's 2003 Vannevar Bush award for lifetime contributions to the nation in science and technology.

Atkinson will receive the award from the National Science Board at a May 21 awards dinner at the Department of State in Washington, D.C. He is the 25th recipient of the award since its inception in 1980.

The Vannevar Bush award recognizes the recipient's public service contributions in addition to calling attention to the important role science and technology play in improving our way of life.
