OAKLAND, CA -- Pamela J. Jester has been appointed director of Continuing Education of the Bar, a leading provider of legal education programs and publications. University of California Provost and Senior Vice President--Academic Affairs C. Judson King announced his decision following a nationwide search.

Jester, who earned her law degree from Golden Gate University, has worked actively to promote opportunities for women attorneys in the state. She is a past president of California Women Lawyers and past co-chair of the State Bar of California women in the law committee. She serves on the board of directors of the Alameda County Bar Association and as a pro-tem mental health hearing officer for Alameda Superior Court.

As interim director of the Continuing Education of the Bar (CEB) since 2002 and its codirector since 1997, Jester has played a major role in overseeing program and product development. Her contributions to CEB began much earlier, however. From 1981 to 1992, she was a research attorney at CEB, and in 1992 she became manager of product development.

Palmer Brown Madden, past president of the State Bar of California, served on the selection committee that nominated Jester for her new position.

"Pam embodies everything the law profession could wish for in a CEB director," Madden said. "She has a great deal of editorial experience with CEB, which gives her the necessary technical skills; plus, she has a demonstrated commitment to public service, as shown in the time she has spent developing the profession and advancing opportunities for women in the law. Pam has got so much experience both with the profession and with CEB that she's going to be a great leader."

"Pam brings a wonderful mix of problem-solving ability, sound judgment, collegiality and leadership to the Alameda County Bar Association," added its president, Richard P. Waxman, a partner in the law firm of Wendel, Rosen, Black & Dean in Oakland. "I am sure she brings those same talents to CEB."

"CEB is the largest organization of its kind in this country and has a long history of excellence," said Jester, the first woman to lead the organization. "Several distinguished women attorneys at CEB have gone on to hold prestigious posts in the California legal community, including Justice Kathryn M. Werdegar of the State Supreme Court and retired Justice Betty Barry-Deal of the California Court of Appeal. I look forward to maintaining the high standards set by these women."

CEB, a statewide continuing legal education provider founded in 1947, is part of the University of California and is cosponsored by the State Bar of California.
