Marguerite Bonous-Hammarth has been named UC Irvine’s director of admissions and relations with schools, effective August 25. She brings 16 years of professional and scholarly experience with the University of California. “As the director of admissions, Marguerite will be in charge of planning and implementing our future student recruitment strategy in a highly competitive environment, said Manuel Gomez, vice chancellor for student affairs. “Her blend of experience in research, project management, marketing communications and California admissions practices are distinct strengths that make her uniquely qualified for making UCI the first choice for top talented students. Currently, Bonous-Hammarth serves as a project director at the UCLA Institute for Social Science Research, where she has designed and implemented a student recruitment summer institute program. Prior to UCLA, she spent 11 years at UCI, where her duties included serving as program director of research and public policy in the admissions office. At UCI, she also assisted in the design and implementation of the faculty-approved guidelines for freshman admissions. These guidelines were among the first to be established in the UC system, leading to the thorough, comprehensive review of every student’s application. “I look forward to working with UCI’s faculty and admissions team to further refine our admission practices, Bonous-Hammarth said. “My most important goal will be attracting highly qualified students who will take full advantage of the engaging, invigorating learning community at UCI. Bonous-Hammarth earned her bachelor’s degree in English from State University of New York at Stony Brook, a master’s degree in literature from UC San Diego and a doctorate in education from UCLA. She replaces Susan Wilbur, who was appointed director of undergraduate admissions for the UC system in January.
