BACKGROUND:
UCI’s School of Physical Sciences announces the dedication ceremony for John V. Croul Hall, a 68,000-square-foot research center for the Department of Earth System Science. The facility will house laboratories, a conference center and office space for faculty, staff, postdoctoral researchers, graduate students and visiting scientists. It will also serve as a leading international center for the study of environmental issues such as global warming and ozone depletion.
The center is named in honor of John V. Croul, co-chair of Santa Ana-based Behr Process Corporation. A Corona del Mar resident who has long been involved in Orange County philanthropic activities, Croul personally donated $6 million for the facility – the largest gift ever received by the School of Physical Sciences.
Ceremony speakers will include Ralph J. Cicerone, UCI chancellor and one of the world’s leading experts on climate change issues, and two Earth system science alumni: Jennifer King, assistant professor at the University of Minnesota, and Bryan Hannegan, associate director for energy and transportation with the White House Council on Environmental Quality.
Following the ceremony, guided tours of Croul Hall will be given and a luncheon buffet will be served for invited guests and the media.
