BACKGROUND: The Southern California Conference on Undergraduate Research was created in 1993 to provide Southern California undergraduates an opportunity to share and celebrate their enthusiasm for discovery. With research ranging across all disciplines, students exhibit their work in poster and oral presentations, as well as through performances. This year’s topics range from an examination of the Oakland-Berkeley firestorm in 1991 to binge drinking patterns in college students; to the buoyancy component of robotic fish to an exploration of meaning and motivation behind religious bumper stickers.

The conference features a keynote address by Oswald Steward, director of UCI’s Reeve-Irvine Research Center. Steward’s research focuses on how nerve cells create and maintain connections with each other, how these synapses are modified after a spinal cord injury, and what genes play a role in nerve cell regeneration, growth and function.
