Roger Corman, through his company, New Horizons, has agreed to provide production funding of $100,000 to one or more UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television students to produce a feature-length motion picture.
"I am thrilled that Roger, continuing his great tradition, is investing in the new talent emerging from UCLA," said Barbara Boyle, chair of the film, television and digital media department.
To be considered for the production money, students must be near completion of the graduate M.F.A. program in film directing. After students submit proposals, consisting of a completed thesis film project and feature-length screenplay, a faculty committee will forward appropriate projects for Corman's final selection.
After Corman chooses one or more proposals, funding for $100,000 per project will be given, and the applicants will produce a feature-length motion picture. Corman has pledged one-third of the profits from the resulting films to the department of film, television and digital media.
Corman has produced more than 550 films and directed 50 others. He is known for his bare-bones productions, which spawned major talent such as Peter Bogdanovich, James Cameron, Francis Ford Coppola, Joe Dante, Jonathan Demme, Peter Fonda, Jack Nicholson and Martin Scorsese. Corman made the first biker movie, "Wild Angels," starring Peter Fonda and followed it up with "The Trip," written by and starring Jack Nicholson.
Corman continues to produce and inspire up and coming talent. His autobiography, "How I Made a Hundred Movies in Hollywood and Never Lost a Dime" (Random House, 1990), is considered a must-read for any aspiring filmmaker.
