WHAT:
Two weeks prior to a special primary election, 17 candidates vying for the open 48th Congressional district seat have been invited to a candidate forum co-sponsored by the University of California, Irvine and the City of Irvine. Open to the public, the event will be moderated by attorney and journalist Greg Ricks. The moderator will pose questions on pre-selected topics ranging from the local economy to homeland security. Candidates will not be told questions in advance, but be advised of the discussion topics. Questions will also be submitted by the attending audience.

BACKGROUND:
On Oct. 4, a special primary election will be held in the 48th Congressional District of California to choose a United States Representative to replace Republican Chris Cox, who resigned effective Aug. 2, 2005 and became Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. Seventeen candidates are vying for the vacated seat. If no candidate receives a majority of votes on Oct. 4, the top vote-getters for each party will advance to a Dec. 6 special general election.
