TAMKIN SYMPOSIUM TO OFFER INSIGHTS ON BIOTERRORISM
AND COMMUNITY DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

WHAT:
"Bioterrorism and Community Disaster Preparedness," the 7th annual
Tamkin Symposium, will provide an update on the latest issues in
bioterrorism and how infectious diseases could potentially become an
epidemic. Held by the UC Irvine School of Medicine, this annual
symposium on medical and health care issues features speakers from UCI
and elsewhere who are distinguished in their fields.

BACKGROUND:
The Tamkin Symposium is supported by a gift from Dr. S. Jerome Tamkin
and his wife, Judith. This year's symposium features highly recognized
physicians and community leaders who will present topics to help the
community better prepare for a disaster or act of bioterrorism. Audience
members will have an opportunity to address the speakers. The program
schedule includes these topics and speakers:

8 a.m. Registration, continental breakfast and introductions.
9:30 a.m. "Bioterrorism, Post 9/11" with Dr. Tareg Bey, associate
clinical professor of emergency medicine, UCI.
10 a.m. "Emerging Infectious Diseases" with Dr. Thomas C. Cesario, dean
of the School of Medicine, UCI.
10:45 a.m. "Psychological Issues After Disasters" with Dr. Barry
Chaitin, professor of psychiatry and human behavior, UCI.
1 p.m. "Radiological Terrorism" with Dr. Tareg Bey.
1:20 p.m. "Chemical Terrorism" with Dr. Jeffrey Suchard, director
of medical toxicology, UCI Medical Center.
1:40 p.m. "Blast Injuries" with Dr. Carl Schultz, professor of
clinical emergency medicine, UCI.
2:15 p.m. "Disaster Planning" with Terre Duensing, Office of
Emergency Management, Orange County Sheriff's Department.
2:35 p.m. "Earthquake Preparedness" with Donna Boston, Office of
Emergency Management, Orange County Sheriff's Department.
