Los Angeles civic leader Carolbeth Korn (Beverly Hills) has donated $200,000 to the UCLA School of Public Health to endow, in perpetuity, an annual $10,000 prize honoring the outstanding graduating student each year.
Beginning this May, recipients of the Carolbeth Korn Prize will be selected by the faculty leadership and dean of the School of Public Health and announced during the school's annual awards event.
"Carolbeth Korn has been a friend of the students, faculty and staff of the UCLA School of Public Health for many years," said Dr. Linda Rosenstock, dean of the school. "This generous gift will provide vital support and acknowledgement to our most outstanding graduating students, as well as assist student recruitment for many generations to come."
Korn is an active community and civic leader in California. She graduated from UCLA in 1959 with a bachelor's degree in public health. While at UCLA she also received a National Institutes of Health fellowship in biostatistics.
In 1997, she donated $100,000 to the UCLA School of Public Health, at the time the largest unrestricted gift in the school's history. The Dean's Meeting Room was renamed the Carolbeth Korn Meeting Room in recognition of her generosity. Korn serves on the advisory board for the school and is one of its founding members.
"By establishing this annual prize, I hope to encourage and motivate public health students to become our nation's public health leaders," Korn said. "It is my love for this prestigious university, which educated me, that makes me very proud to be investing in the School of Public Health's exceptional healthcare training and education. The students who receive this award will have the opportunity to touch, change and enrich the lives of many."
Also at UCLA, Korn serves on the Board of Directors of Women and Philanthropy and is a member of the UCLA Foundation Governors. She has supported the Rhonda Fleming Mann Resource Center for Women With Cancer and the Sue K. Young Scholarship Fund. In 1990, she received the Neil H. Jacoby Award from the UCLA International Student Center.
Korn is married to Lester B. Korn, co-founder of Korn/Ferry International and former ambassador to the United Nations. She met her husband when they were both students at UCLA. As a couple they have been active at UCLA for many years. The Carolbeth and Lester Korn Convocation Hall at the UCLA Anderson School of Management is named in recognition of their significant contributions. They also assisted in the establishment of the John Wooden Center and the James E. West Alumni Center at UCLA and continue to support the Chancellor's Cabinet.
"The Korns have been generous supporters of UCLA," said Chancellor Albert Carnesale. "At a time when there is a critical shortage of public health professionals, Carolbeth Korn's latest gift will help get our best and brightest graduate students into the field and making a difference."
In addition to her activities at UCLA, Carolbeth Korn serves on the resident's cabinet of the Richard M. Nixon Library and Birthplace Foundation as well as being a member of the chairman's club of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum. She is also a founding member of the Los Angeles Library Foundation Council. She is a charter member of the Republican National Committee.
Korn has been active in the Los Angeles Music Center, where she serves as a member of its board of directors and is a member of the executive committee. She is the chairman of the founders advisory committee, and was chairman and chief executive officer of the Founders League of the Music Center from 1999 to 2003, when she was elected chairman emeritus. She has been a Blue Ribbon member for more than 20 years; and 1994 she was Blue Ribbon Chair of the children's festival. She has been a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Board of Overseers since 2002.
In the business world, Korn has been a trustee of the Ambase Corporation Mutual Funds; a founder of the First Beverly Bank, Beverly Hills; and a member of the board of Korn-Tuttle Capital Group. Additionally she serves as a director of the Korn Capital Group.
