WHAT: The first-ever "Berkeley Project Day," where more than 1,000 students at the University of California, Berkeley, will converge on the city of Berkeley for a mass one-day volunteering effort. Projects will include cleaning the Berkeley Marina shoreline, sprucing up the downtown BART Plaza and seismically retrofitting a home for senior citizens.

The event is being organized by UC Berkeley students whose stated goal is to "physically improve Berkeley and forge a positive relationship between the campus and the community." It is modeled after a similar project at the University of Michigan. The student volunteers will be wearing brown shirts.

WHEN: This Saturday, Nov. 11, 9 a.m. -5 p.m.

WHERE: The event kicks off at Upper Sproul Plaza on the UC Berkeley campus at 9 a.m., with volunteers starting work at more than 40 project sites around Berkeley at 10 a.m. For project locations, visit http://bp.berkeley.edu/sites.php
