Noted Clinician, Researcher and Administrator to Oversee UC Irvine Medical Center, College of Health Sciences

Dr. David N. Bailey, interim vice chancellor for health sciences and interim dean of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, has been named vice chancellor for health affairs at the University of California, Irvine, effective April 1, 2007.

Bailey will oversee the campus's entire spectrum of health sciences activities, which includes UC Irvine Medical Center, UC Irvine University Physicians and Surgeons and the College of Health Sciences. He also will serve as dean of the School of Medicine.

"The candidates for this position were outstanding," said Chancellor Michael V. Drake. "However, David Bailey's understanding of health sciences, higher education and the University of California system is unparalleled. There is no one more respected by his peers."

Drake created the position in January to centralize health sciences administration at UCI; Bailey will report directly to the chancellor's office. "I am extraordinarily excited by the chance to help take UC Irvine to the next level of excellence in health affairs," Bailey said. "The opportunities at UC Irvine are abundant, with a new hospital under construction, a unified faculty practice plan, cutting-edge basic and clinical research, an outstanding comprehensive cancer center, a new stem cell research center, innovative programs in nursing science, pharmaceutical sciences and public health, and interactions with a world-class general campus. It is hard to top all of that."

Bailey is a noted clinician, administrator and researcher. As interim vice chancellor and dean at UCSD, he has many of the same responsibilities he will have at UCI, including oversight of the medical center, faculty practice plan, School of Medicine, and Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. He also is a professor of pathology and director of the toxicology laboratory at UCSD and has been a popular teacher of medical students and residents throughout his career. Bailey's earlier appointments included dean for faculty and student matters and chair of the Department of Pathology at UCSD, a post he held for 14 years.

As a researcher, he studies the clinical toxicology and pharmacology of psychoactive drugs, and has published numerous papers in these areas. He has been recognized by the Institute for Scientific Information as one of the world's 10 most cited authors in forensic sciences.

Bailey received his medical degree from Yale University in 1973. He is listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World and American Men & Women of Sciences. He has been president of the California Association of Toxicologists, secretary-treasurer of the Association of Pathology Chairs and president of the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians & Scientists, which honored him with the Gerald T. Evans Award.

UCI Health Sciences encompasses the medical center and the College of Health Sciences, which includes the School of Medicine and emerging programs in public health, nursing science and pharmaceutical sciences. The School of Medicine is among the top 50 in the nation for research funding expenditures and is home to one Nobel Prize winner, four members of the Institute of Medicine and five National Academy of Sciences members. Current faculty oversee the education and training of more than 400 medical students, 600 residents and 120 graduate students.

UC Irvine Medical Center is the only university hospital in Orange County, offering acute- and general-care service. It has the county's only Level I trauma center, American College of Surgeons-verified regional burn center and National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center. Included in its University Children's Hospital is the county's most sophisticated neonatal unit, which cares for more than 500 premature and at-risk infants each year. UC Irvine Medical Center also is the only hospital in Orange County recognized in U.S. News & World Report's annual listing of "America's Best Hospitals" and the first to receive Magnet Designation for nursing excellence.
