Controlling mosquitoes and cockroaches

Mosquito and cockroach control will be among the topics when the Northern California Entomology Club, affiliated with the Department of Entomology, University of California, Davis, meets on Thursday, Feb. 1 in Fairfield.

The meeting, to be held in the Hungry Hunter restaurant, 2470 Martin Road, begins at 9:15 a.m. with registration and coffee and includes five speakers. The group is comprised of university faculty, researchers, students, mosquito and pest abatement professionals and other interested persons, said UC Davis mosquito researcher and club president Debbie Dritz. All club meetings are open to the public.

The schedule includes:

9:45 a.m.: "Update on Diaprepes Root Weevil Management in San Diego County" by Kris Godfrey, Integrated Pest Control, California Department of Food and Agriculture

10:30 a.m.: "Fundamentals of Using Nematodes to Control Agricultural Pests" by Glen Stevens of the UC Davis Department of Entomology

11:15 a.m.: "Mosquito Control Techniques for Homeowners" by Dave Brown, Sacramento/Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District

Noon: Catered lunch

1:30: "Fly Fishermen as Monitors of Environmental Conditions in Aqueous Habitats" by Michael Parrella, UC Davis Department of Entomology

2 pm.: "Controlling Cockroaches in and around the Home" by Michelle DiMaggio of the Contra Costa Health Services

The Northern California Entomology Club meets the first Thursdays of February, May and November. The group meets in February at the Hungry Hunter, Fairfield; in May at Sudwerk, Davis, and in November at the Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District office, Concord. Membership dues are $10 year.
