Energy and the environment focus of annual engineering symposium

The Henry Samueli School of Engineering presents its sixth annual California: Prosperity Through Technology industry research symposium, "Energy and the Environment." Academic, industry and government leaders will explore California's efforts to protect the environment while responding to increasing demands for energy. UC Irvine Chancellor Michael V. Drake will give welcoming remarks. UCI presenters include Scott Samuelsen, director of the National Fuel Cell Research Center; hydrologists Soroosh Sorooshian and Jay Famiglietti; engineer Donald Dabdub; and atmospheric chemists F. Sherwood Rowland and Barbara Finlayson-Pitts. Representatives from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the California Energy Commission also will give talks. Engineering Dean Nicolaos G. Alexopoulos will give a lunchtime address on the opening day. Larry Smarr, director of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, will present at lunchtime on the second day.

BACKGROUND:
The Henry Samueli School of Engineering is at the forefront of energy and environmental technology research. The school is affiliated with the Advanced Power and Energy Program, the National Fuel Cell Research Center, the Combustion Laboratory, the Center for Hydrometeorology and Remote Sensing, and the Urban Water Research Center.
