The following statement was issued today by University of California President Richard C. Atkinson on the announcement that George A. Akerlof was a recipient of the 2001 Nobel Prize for economic sciences.

"I am proud that UC professor George Akerlof has been
awarded the 2001 Nobel Prize for economic sciences in recognition
of his landmark research on the forces that explain how markets
work. This extraordinary honor is a tribute to the originality,
vigor, and excellence of his research and to the remarkable
quality of the Berkeley campus. I am delighted to extend the
congratulations of the entire UC community to our newest Nobel
Laureate."
