Assisting students displaced by Hurricane Katrina
Campus contacts for current UC students from affected areas
In solidarity with the rest of the American higher education community, all of the University of California campuses are working to meet the needs of university students in the Gulf Coast region who have been displaced by Hurricane Katrina.
We encourage students interested in attending a UC campus this fall to contact that campus directly. Admissions, financial aid, and student support staff members are standing by to help. As of early October, 2005, the 10-campus UC system has made more than 500 offers of accommodation to displaced students, and more than 280 students have enrolled at a UC campus for the fall.
As we address student needs, the University of California also intends to be fully supportive of the needs and recovery efforts of the higher education institutions in the Gulf Coast region, and to help them get back in the business of education as soon as possible. We will be working to identify every possible means of making a constructive contribution to these institutions’ recovery from the hurricane.
While some details necessarily will vary from campus to campus, the UC system is applying the following overall principles to accommodating students displaced by Hurricane Katrina:
-
Students who have been displaced by the hurricane and are currently seeking a place at the University of California are encouraged to directly contact the campus of interest to them.
Campus contacts for current UC students from affected areas -
UC campuses are making every effort to accommodate students displaced by the hurricane. First priority will be given to students who previously applied and were admitted to their UC campus of interest but chose to attend a Gulf Coast institution instead; second priority will be given to students who are California residents but who have not previously applied and been admitted to a UC campus; and third priority will be given to nonresident students who have not previously applied and been admitted to UC.
-
UC admissions of students displaced by the hurricane will be on a temporary basis, recognizing the emergency nature of this situation. As noted above, the University of California wishes to contribute constructively to the recovery of the higher education institutions in the Gulf Coast region and ensure that their student enrollments are sustained when they reopen.
-
Campuses will work assiduously with affected students to ensure that sufficient financial aid is made available to meet their needs, so that students may pursue their studies this fall without undue concern to their financial circumstances. The University also is seeking private support to help cover the expenses of students affected by this catastrophe.
