UC and Los Alamos:
Improving Management, Serving the Nation

Since early January 2003, the University of California has made a series of sweeping actions at the Los Alamos National Laboratory to improve management practices. They include 18 personnel changes, including the resignation of the director and termination of the principal deputy director; the interim assignments of UC senior executives to run laboratory administrative operations; and contracting with such major outside accounting firms as PricewaterhouseCoopers and Ernst & Young to thoroughly review financial and business operations. UC President Richard C. Atkinson has also appointed retired Vice Admiral George P. "Pete" Nanos as interim director and Bruce B. Darling, senior vice president of university affairs, as interim vice president for laboratory management.

"We have taken these sweeping and dramatic steps because of the pride we at the University of California feel for our long and productive association with Los Alamos," said Atkinson. "In the weeks and months ahead, I intend to do everything I can to address the issues that have been raised and to restore the confidence we have enjoyed for much of our 60-year association with the laboratory. My absolute priority is to take whatever steps are necessary to preserve our partnership and to return the nation's focus to Los Alamos' preeminent position in science and national security."
