UC has undertaken a number of efforts to ensure access for qualified students of all backgrounds. For instance:
- The opening of UC’s 10th campus, at Merced
- Academic preparation programs that work directly in public schools to help improve the performance and college preparation of K-12 students
- A new initiative to dramatically expand UC’s production of highly qualified science and mathematics teachers for California’s public schools
- A medical school program called “Prime-LC” that enrolls students of all ethnic backgrounds to become competent in serving the medical needs of the Latino community – a model that will be expanded to other areas
But ensuring access to a high-quality college education to students of all backgrounds will continue to be an issue of primary importance for California over the next 20 years – particularly as population growth occurs among groups that historically have had low UC eligibility rates.
What other issues should we consider?
