Reinvigorating our relationship with California

Service to the public must be a hallmark of our institutional culture and must guide our administrative decision-making. That means listening to the needs of the public, applying our research and educational capacities to address those needs and ensuring the public’s expectations of accountability and trust are met. To succeed, we must:

• Respond, contribute and be accountable in addressing vital public issues. This includes:
• Contributing to the restoration of K-12 education;
• Addressing the lack of diversity among UC’s faculty and students;
• Developing bold and practical alternatives for maintaining affordability at UC for undergraduates; and
• Surveying the state of operations at our national laboratories.

What’s next?

• UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau has convened a committee to report to the January 2008 Regents meeting on affordability alternatives, including an “omnibus scholarship fund” concept.
• Executive Vice President Bruce Darling and Vice President Bob Foley are undertaking a rapid survey of the state of operations at the labs, two of which are now under a new form of governance. They are schedule to report to Regents in November.

• Re-examine UCOP’s external relations functions so we are able to articulate our accomplishments and objectives effectively and ensure the University’s economic and social value is clear to ourselves, our supporters and those we serve. In particular, this effort will focus on improving the University’s State Governmental Relations function and our methods for energizing alumni and donors.
