UC’s Impact on California
Through its educational, economic, health and community contributions, the University of California enriches the lives of all Californians, whether they personally attend UC or not.
Among these benefits:
- UC spending triggers more than $14 billion in economic growth and $4 billion in tax revenues annually.
- UC accounts for 370,000 jobs each year - 2% of the state's total.
- More than 1,100 California biotech, high-tech and other R&D-intensive companies put UC research to work every day.
- UC trains half of the state's doctors, and operates the 5th-largest health care delivery system in California.
- UC's myriad of libraries, performing arts centers, museums and gardens enrich California's communities.
- UC sponsors many community activities, youth and recreational sports programs throughout the state, including California 4-H.
The question today is, how can UC sustain this critical contribution to California over the next 20 years, given the changes and challenges facing both the state and the University?
What other issues should we consider?
