Learning as she grows

Lauri Twitchell

Lauri Twitchell is digging into her job as manager of Blake Garden, the wooded estate that has served as a living laboratory for generations of university landscape architecture students. One of them designed the garden and another, Twitchell, now is responsible for its daily care. That means everything from tending the worm farm to supervising volunteers and students to growing vegetables for the UC president.

Catching the American Indian spirit

The new American Indian Resource Program aims to increase the number of American Indian students on the Irvine campus through mentorship programs, summer academies for transfer and high school students, and an Anteater Bridge program to start American Indian students in grades 6 to 8 on the path to academic success. Nikishna Polequaptewa, a member of the Hopi tribe and a 2005 UCI graduate, is directing the new program, which is also a resource for the 100 or so American Indian students now on campus.

Best Thing About My Job?

Theresa Davies, a principal legal analyst in the Office of the General Counsel, helps investigate claims against UC's medical centers and health care professionals. "The medical issues I deal with are interesting," says Davies. "Medicine in general is interesting, so is learning more about the research the university is involved with in fighting disease. It's really exciting to interact with some of these great people the university has and be a part of their world."

OP organization aids disadvantaged students

The UCOP Black Staff and Faculty Organization celebrates Black History Month each February with a soul food lunch, one of its many fund-raising enterprises. Proceeds provide scholarships for worthy East Bay high school seniors on their way to college. BSFO President Terry Williams helped create the organization in 1986, and today the group has more than 200 members dedicated to promoting workplace diversity, serving the surrounding community and helping youngsters get an education.

 

WASC reports on UCOP

The Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the independent accreditation agency for universities, issued a report that addresses many UCOP issues and validates reforms now taking place, both in senior management compensation and the overall governance of the university. New Web site highlights HR redesign initiatives

As part of the UCOP restructuring effort, Human Resources and Benefits has several initiatives underway aimed at refocusing the department to become more strategically focused, efficient and effective.
