President Dynes' visit to Half Moon Bay, July 2005
 |
Jack Pearlstein, President of Nurserymen's Exchange -- one of America's leading
wholesale home and garden companies based in Half Moon Bay -- shows President
Dynes how research from UC and other land-grant universities is helping revolutionize pest management and
other industry practices in his greenhouses.

During a visit to Elkus Ranch, a 600-acre ranch donated to UC for educating
youth about the environment, Dynes met with young adults who take part in the
ranch's horticulture therapy programs. The program teaches gardening practices
like transplanting and seed collection, with the hope that some
students will be able to secure local employment as a result of their training.
Elkus Ranch annually hosts more than 9,000 youth and adults who participate
in a variety of educational programs -- including the UC-led 4-H program.
