UC Board of Regents names new chair, re-elects vice chair

The University of California Board of Regents today (May 21) elected Monica Lozano as the new board chair for a one-year term beginning July 1.

Lozano is currently serving as vice chair of the board’s Committee on Compensation and as a member of the committees on educational policy, finance, investments and long range planning. She was appointed to the UC Board of Regents by Gov. Gray Davis in 2001 for a 12-year term that expired in 2013. She was re-appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown in 2014 to a term ending in 2022.

Lozano is the chairman of US Hispanic Media, Inc., and former CEO of Impremedia. She succeeds Bruce D. Varner, whose term as chairman expires on June 30.

The board also re-elected Regent Fred Ruiz as vice chairman. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Ruiz as a regent in 2004. He is co-founder and chairman emeritus of Ruiz Foods, Inc. He is currently chair of the board’s Committee on Finance, vice chair of the Committee on Compliance and Audit and a member of the committees on grounds and buildings, health services, and long range planning. He will serve until Feb. 29, 2016.
