POLICY ON UNIVERSITY-PROVIDED HOUSING
Approved December 10, 1992
Amended September 22, 2005

It is the policy of The Regents to provide suitable housing for the President and the Chancellor of each campus to enable the Officer to perform the administrative, ceremonial, and social duties of the position. Each Officer shall occupy said housing as a condition of employment for the convenience of the University.

If the University-provided housing for an individual is unsuitable to accommodate the range of duties required of the Officer or if renovations make it uninhabitable for a period of time, The Regents may grant an exception to the requirement that the Officer inhabit such housing, based upon a recommendation by the President.

To accommodate temporary housing needs, The Regents may grant a housing allowance to an individual. The terms and conditions of any agreement to provide an alternative housing arrangement will conform to the following principles and purposes:

. The arrangement will enable the Officer to perform properly the duties of the position both during and after normal working hours;

. The arrangement will be similar to or competitive with an existing or proposed situation at another institution, to provide for recruitment or retention; and/or

. The arrangement will provide for reasonable housing assistance consistent with prevailing University practice, as circumstance or need dictates.

The President may approve the use of appropriate fund sources in support of the terms and conditions of an approved arrangement, including the Searles Fund and unrestricted funds available to the President and, for mortgage loans, the unrestricted portion of the Short-Term Investment Pool.
