Ben
Allen is a law student at Boalt Hall at the University
of California, Berkeley. A Santa Monica native,
he received his B.A., magna cum laude,
in history from Harvard University in 2000 and
his master's degree in Latin American Studies
from Cambridge University in 2001. Before coming
to Berkeley, Mr. Allen worked on development projects
in Latin America for the National Democratic Institute
for International Affairs, as a community organizer
for Los Angeles Unified School District, and then
as Communications Director for Congressman José
Serrano. In the summer of 2006, he was a judicial
clerk at the International Criminal Tribunal for
Rwanda in Africa. He is a Senior Fellow with the
international human rights organization Humanity
In Action, and volunteers at the La Raza Workers'
Rights Clinic in Oakland. He also serves on the
Financial Oversight Committee of the Santa Monica-Malibu
Unified School District, and teaches high school
students in inner-city Oakland through Boalt Hall's
Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project.
Mr. Allen was appointed in July 2006 by The Regents
to serve as the student Regent for a one-year
term beginning July 1, 2007.
