To elucidate a set of principles that will govern decisions about who is and who is not a member of the Academic Senate. The Task Force will study the past decisions, including that of Standing Order 105.1(a), and learn whether and how that rationale has changed over time. The Task Force also will delineate what gives and what ought to give Senate membership meaning and significance.
The Task Force is expected to consider operational aspects necessary to fulfilling their charge, such as: the informational resources it needs; issues of Senate privilege, responsibilities, and obligations; and practical implications of narrowing or expanding Senate membership. The Task Force will complete an evaluation of whether such principles are in accord with current membership by gathering information on the appointment and promotion processes and academic expectations for appointees in non-Senate academic titles. If the Task Force finds that the principles are not in accord with current membership, it will recommend actions that might bring principles and membership to accordance. During this phase of the Task Force's work, some changes of membership may be appropriate to reflect changes in Council membership and Divisional leadership.
