Blumenthal is Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University
of California, Santa Cruz, where he has been on the faculty since
1972. Professor Blumenthal received his B.S. degree from the University
of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and his Ph.D. in physics from the University
of California, San Diego. He has served on numerous Academic Senate
Committees and has chaired both the Astronomy & Astrophysics Department
at UCSC and the Santa Cruz Division of the Academic Senate. As
a theoretical astrophysicist, Professor Blumenthal's research encompasses
several broad areas, including the nature of the dark matter which
constitutes most of the mass in the Universe, the origin of galaxies
and other large structures in the Universe, and the structure of
active galactic nuclei such as quasars. Professor Blumenthal is
also a co-author of the astronomy text 21st Century Astronomy.
