Fall 2010 applications hit record high
Despite the fee increases approved in November, fall admission applications increased 5.8 percent. A record 134,029 freshmen and transfer students applied compared to last year's 126,701.
The growth in transfer applications was the most robust, up 17.5 percent, with 33,709 applications compared to 28,699 in 2009.
Among transfer applicants there was a 48.2 percent increase in African American applicants, 42.6 percent for American Indians, 24.6 percent for Chicano/Latinos, 16 percent for Asian Americans, 9.9 percent for Pacific Islanders and 4.2 percent for white/others.
We can credit the rise in California transfer applicants, in part, to our well-publicized commitment to enroll an additional 500 transfers in 2009 in spite of reducing freshman fall enrollment. We will further increase transfer enrollments for fall 2010.
The increase in transfers may also be connected to California State University's closure of transfer applications for the spring 2010 term.
